Born in Paris in 1972, Olivier Modr focuses his work on the interactions between computer technology and our society. He explores subjects such as memory, virtuality, social relations and ephemerality. Starting as a musician, he studied jazz at IMFP, a music institute in Salon de Provence, France. At the end of his studies while recording a video clip, he discovered the world of animation and became a pioneer of 3D animation in France in the 1990s, working in special effects until 2003. While on assignment in California, he took his first formative photograph. In 2006, he moved to Houston setting up his first art studio in the workshops of sculptor David Adickes. Here, he created large format photography and participated in collective exhibitions for the John Cleary Gallery, directed by Catherine Couturier. In 2009, he established his base in Caochangdi, on the outskirts of Beijing. In this bastion of contemporary Chinese art, he exchanged with artists such as Ai Weiwei, He Yunchang and Wang Qingsong, among others. He began his video projection works and collaborated with performance artists Alessandro Rolandi, Megumi Shimizu and music band Ghost Magnet on multi disciplinary projects with performance, video projection, sculpture and music. In 2013, he set up his studio in a historic building in La Ferté-Milon in the Paris region and published two photographic works. Since 2017, he lives and works in Houston and divides his time between France and the United States.
